A Local Mum\u2019s Guide to Fun with Primary School Kids <\/h3>\n

Hi! I\u2019m Caroline from Brathay Cottages, a local mum of two energetic children and I wanted to share some of our favourite things to do in the South Lakes over the summer holidays. We\u2019re so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world, and whether you're visiting for a week or here for the whole summer, there\u2019s plenty to keep the kids happy, active, and off their screens (well, mostly!).\u00a0 H<\/span>ere is my Mum's guide to fun in the Lakes.<\/p>\n

Paddle, Splash and Picnic at Fell Foot Park<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fell Foot, down at the southern tip of Windermere, is one of our go-to spots. There\u2019s a safe little area for paddling, big open spaces for running wild, and loads of perfect places for a picnic. We always take a football, frisbee, lilo (if it is warm enough!) and a few nets for pond dipping. There's even a little caf\u00e9 for ice creams and hot drinks when the weather turns a bit British! My kids and their friends also absolutely love the adventure playground and will play happily for ages. And all for the price of the parking ticket (free to National Trust members).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mini Adventures on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s something magical about an old steam train, and this one\u2019s a winner every time. The journey is just the right length for younger kids, and you can pair it with a trip to the Lakes Aquarium (which is right by the Lakeside station). Mine love the otters and the underwater tunnel \u2013 it\u2019s small but really engaging.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Day at Brockhole on Windermere<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Brockhole is brilliant for families. There\u2019s an adventure playground, a mini golf course, archery, and if your kids are a bit older or a bit braver, the Treetop Trek is a big hit. Plus, you can hire boats or take a cruise on Windermere \u2013 a lovely way to wind down after all the activity.\u00a0 A day or even an afternoon at Blockhole is top usually top my list of fun things to do in the South Lakes. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hands-On History at Wray Castle<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Okay, so this isn\u2019t your typical castle \u2013 it\u2019s more of a mock-Gothic Victorian house, but kids don\u2019t care about that! It looks like something out of a fairy tale and has loads of fun rooms to explore. They often have themed activities or trails running during the holidays, and the views over Windermere are stunning. There is lots of space outside for play and adventures, and the paths are great for scooters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beatrix Potter\u2019s World in Bowness<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been more times than I can count, and it never gets old! The characters come to life in a way that really captures the imagination. It\u2019s perfect for younger children, and it\u2019s indoors \u2013 so a great option for those inevitable rainy summer days.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Simple Joys: Walking, River paddling & Sheep Spotting<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes the best memories are made just by being outdoors. There are so many lovely spots for a walk (or a scoot!) \u2013 like Elterwater, Tarn Hows or the shores of Coniston plus so many rivers. Pack some snacks, take a towel (someone will \u2018fall\u2019 in or take an impromptu swim), and let them explore. We play \u2018spot the Herdwick sheep\u2019 when distraction tactics are needed to finish a longer walk!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
