A Local Foodie’s Guide to the Best Restaurants in Ambleside

As someone lucky enough to call Ambleside home, I often get asked where to eat when friends or guests visit. And honestly? We may be a small Lakeland town, but we’re absolutely bursting with incredible food – from fine dining to much cheaper hidden gems. So, I thought I’d share a few of my absolute favourites – places I return to again and again, whether I’m celebrating something special or just craving good comfort food.

Lake Road Kitchen

Let’s start with a Michelin starred showstopper. Lake Road Kitchen is where I go for a special evening out. It’s small, intimate, and totally ingredient-led – think Scandi-style dishes with a Cumbrian soul. Chef James Cross is a genius with flavour, and the multi-course tasting menu is always an adventure. Saddleback pork, Ora King Salmon, Steamed Norwegian Halibut… you never quite know what you’ll get, but it’s always sensational.  And do make sure to book ahead!

The Old Stamp House

You can’t talk about food in Ambleside without mentioning The Old Stamp House – another Michelin-starred treasure, tucked into the former office of poet William Wordsworth. The food is a deep dive into the history and ingredients of Cumbria – hearty and beautifully plated. Think Herdwick lamb, local venison, foraged herbs, and nods to our local farming traditions. If you’re after a true taste of the Lakes, this is it. It is really important you book in advance and that needs to be quite a long way in the Summer season.

Tacos del Sol

Okay, shifting gears completely – this one’s for when I want flavour-packed street food and something a bit more casual. Tacos del Sol is a little slice of Mexico right in Ambleside. Their slow-cooked beef tacos are ridiculously good – my order is steak tacos with cheese, and I go for an 8 rating on the spice although go for an 11 if you are a heat lover! It is run by Marisol and Chris: Marisol is originally from Mexico City and cooks everything fresh to order. Grab a few tacos (and did I mention their Burritos?!) and a cold cerveza, and you’ve got yourself a perfect lunch or laid-back lunch.  Make sure to get in before they sell out!

Bar Es

A firm favourite for a relaxed evening out, Bar Es brings another Mexican vibe to our Lakeland town with a fantastic tapas menu and the warmest of welcomes. I usually order way too many dishes, but don’t worry we always finish the,, – and they’ve got a great selection of wines and cocktails too. It’s lively and cosy and always has a great atmosphere.

Zeffirellis

Zeffirellis is a bit of an Ambleside institution – vegetarian, yes, but even the most die-hard meat eaters I know love it here. Their wood-fired pizzas and imaginative pastas are always spot on, and the best part? You can combine dinner with a film at their fab little cinema upstairs. It’s the perfect night out, especially on a rainy Lake District evening. Their live jazz nights are also a local secret.

Doi Intanon

If you’re in the mood for Thai, Doi Intanon is the real deal. Family-run and full of flavour, the dishes here are freshly cooked and always delicious. Their weeping tiger is one of my go-tos after a day out in the fresh air– warm, fragrant, and just the right level of spicy, pair with some Pad Thai Jay and you’re on to a winner . Don’t skip the Bangkok Bangers either – they’re a must try starter!

Misto

Misto menu is inspired by Italy but with a creative twist – think handmade pastas, seasonal small plates, and an excellent wine list. The vibe is relaxed and modern, and the staff are lovely. Perfect for a date night or a catch-up with friends.

The Priest Hole

For a classic Lakeland pub experience with generous portions and proper comfort food, The Priest Hole never disappoints. Set in a charming old building with loads of character, it’s ideal for a hearty meal after a day exploring. There is also good outdoor seating for those sunny days of al fresco dining. I always go for the 24 hour Slow Braised Lamb Shank or the local Cumberland sausage– both proper, soul-warming plates. And yes, the sticky toffee pudding is as good as they say!

So there you have it – my go-to places in Ambleside when hunger strikes. Whether you’re in the mood for fine dining, fiery tacos, Thai spice or traditional Lakeland fare, there are lots of options

If you’re visiting soon, I hope this gives you some foodie inspiration. And if you’re local like me, maybe it’s a reminder to book that table you’ve been meaning to. Let’s keep supporting these amazing spots – they’re a huge part of what makes Ambleside special.

Happy eating!
